In May 2022, Syracuse University Libraries implemented a homegrown ‘Bento Box’ search tool that precedes our main discovery layer, Summon. The goal was to lighten the cognitive load of new researchers, who may be unfamiliar with limiting content types. In this presentation, I will discuss a mixed methods approach to usability testing, as well as the opportunities and challenges that come with building an in-house discovery layer.
