Opening Keynote: The Dangers of Empathy
Empathy is widely held as an important research mindset among designers. Many design research processes begin with the word. While empathy is broadly necessary to design practice, it is not without its problems. Most designers and researchers do not also know the dangers of empathy. Consider that:
  • We confuse and conflate empathy, sympathy, and compassion. The differences are critically important.
  • Empathic resonance in the brain is extremely biased. We find it hard to empathize with people unlike ourselves.
  • Having too much empathy may also be problematic and can be weaponized by bad actors.
  • We feel empathy only for humans and animals‚ not for objects, spaces, places, or our planet.
We will explore some limitations of empathy and show how and why two additional emotive capacities should be cultivated: curiosity and care.

Cassini Nazir will be joining us remotely.

Overcoming Barriers to UX Research
Libraries aren’t flush with resources, and UX research often falls to a small team, a team of one, or perhaps no one at all. Barriers appear at every stage: picking a method and designing an effective study (and maybe getting it approved), securing incentives and recruiting enough of the right participants, conducting the research itself, and then turning findings into actionable next steps. In this talk, we’ll discuss how to overcome barriers at every stage for more realistic and sustainable research that can happen no matter your role or institution.

WORKSHOP: A Spring Cleaning Sprint: Let's Tidy Up Our Websites
This in-person workshop will be live streamed and all handouts will be available in advance. The instructor will engage with the virtual audience after the workshop concludes.

Library websites tend to have a lot of content. Our homepages are often cluttered, and hidden in the depths of our websites are often outdated, duplicative, and overly complex web pages, many of which are irrelevant to website visitors. Let's learn some tools and techniques to reduce our content bloat and simplify our websites, making them more sustainable in the long term.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to:
  • Identify where your website needs the most clean up.
  • Prioritize content that matters most through top task surveys, analytics, and other data.
  • Identify web pages you can merge, archive, or delete.
  • Reduce content to its simplest and most sustainable form.
  • Make the case for why simpler is better.

IN-PERSON WORKSHOP: Critical UX: interrupting and interrogating our practice to center equity and justice in design
This workshop will provide an introduction to Critical UX and some of the most foundational methodologies used in UX research, with the goal of participants being able to conduct needs analyses to match UX methodology to project or design stage, and think about how to use UX and user research as a way to create just, equitable, accessible, human-centered and anti-racist systems and products. This workshop will cover the following, with a focus on hands-on exercises and discussion:
  • An introduction to the most foundational UX methodologies, such as usability testing, user interviews and focus groups
  • Considerations and best practices for when and how to incorporate user research into your design project
  • A discussion of the ways in which technology can cause and replicate harm, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and brainstorming strategies and considerations for harm reduction and creating systems of belonging in technology
  • Some discussion of philosophical and theoretical frameworks like critical theory, reparative justice and restorative design
  • Tools used in in-person and remote user research and product testing
  • Resources to continue to critically interrogate our work as designers and developers

Following this course, participants will be able to:
  • think critically about their work as UX researchers and designers and the role they can play to disrupt assumptions about the design and development process.
  • use different theoretical frameworks alongside common UX research methods to minimize bias and harm.
  • apply a justice- and equity-focused lens to the interpretation of UX research data and findings and help design teams to think critically about how they interpret data into empathetic and human-centered interfaces and systems.

ONLINE ATTENDED Q&A: Under the magnifying glass: Building library WCAG maturity through accessibility auditing
Here at Deakin University Library we aim to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA compliance. We try to embed accessibility into everything we do, but:
  • we have a complex digital ecosystem.
  • we have better visibility of accessibility compliance across some platforms over others.
  • we struggle to have a 'bird's eye' view of the current state of accessibility.
  • we are dependent on auto-generated reports.
Sound familiar? To address these challenges, we conducted a multi-platform accessibility audit.
This presentation will unpack drivers, decision points, process and outcomes of our approach.

Utilizing User Experience (UX) research and UX design principles to create a UX research repository
In order to ensure that UX research was easily accessible to those within our organization as well as outside our organization, we embarked upon the design and implementation of a UX repository. UX research and design principals were applied to this selection and implementation process. Dozens of internal user interviews were conducted to better understand needs, personas and user stories around finding and accessing UX research within EBSCO. Various types of content found in our UX research were abstracted and indexed. Product, persona, and feature taxonomies were created around critical information. Features were prioritized according to these newly created personas and user stories. These prioritized features were then used to evaluate various existing products and platforms which could be used for a UX repository. Due to a plethora of protentional product candidates, this process was critical in finding a solution that met the various and diverse needs within the organization. Next steps include the creation of external personas and user stories outside EBSCO. Please note - though I am from a vendor, no vendor products will be demoed in this presentation.
